In 2023, Barnardo’s released their ‘No Crib for a Bed’ research report which showed that 6,000 children across our district were experiencing bed poverty, going to sleep without a proper bed of their own.
What We’ve Accomplished Together
Through the combined efforts of the Wakefield Children’s Bed Appeal and Zarach, an incredible £124,000 has been raised.
That funding has helped to lift 1,482 children out of bed poverty.
To put that into perspective… that’s the equivalent of 50 full classrooms of Wakefield children who now have a safe, warm bed of their own.
It also represents 25% of the total 6,000 children identified in the original research. A quarter of the need addressed through partnership, generosity and community action.
Alongside fundraising, we’ve also built a strong local referral network.
Over 115 schools across the Wakefield district have signed up to the referral system, ensuring children in need can be identified quickly and supported effectively.
The Power of Local Collaboration
This impact has only been possible because of the collective effort of so many organisations and individuals who care deeply about Wakefield’s children. From golf days, to videos, podcasts, sponsored walks and corporate donations – the community has come together in a powerful way for one cause.
