Creating Hope and Belonging in Wakefield, One Smile at a Time

The outside of St Michaels Church in Wakefield on a bright, sunny day

Wakefield District City of Sanctuary is transforming lives and building a more welcoming community for asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants across the Wakefield District.

A warm welcome and real support

Every week, their dedicated team offers far more than just a helping hand, they provide a lifeline of practical support, heartfelt advice, and genuine friendship for people who have had to leave everything behind in search of safety and hope.

From the moment someone steps through the doors at The Sanctuary, St Michael’s Hall, they’re greeted not just with a smile, but with real, tangible help. Whether it’s navigating the complexities of a new country, finding the right services, or simply needing a listening ear, City of Sanctuary is there. Their team offers advice, problem-solving, and signposting, ensuring no one has to face challenges alone. Crucially, they also provide access to essentials: a food store (stocked by the Church of Latter Day Saints, Morrisons, Amazon and FareShare) and a clothing warehouse filled with donated items – everything from warm winter coats to children’s shoes, ready for those who need them most.

Learning, Laughter, and Community

As a result of receiving a Prosper grant, City of Sanctuary has been able to fund three staff members for vibrant Tuesday afternoon sessions and a series of creative workshops. These aren’t your average drop-ins. Each week, between 5 and 15 people gather for lively improv games led by an experienced actor. These sessions are filled with laughter and creativity, breaking down barriers and helping people build confidence while making new friends. It’s a joyful, safe space where everyone is encouraged to join in, regardless of their background or English level.

After a quick break, the energy shifts to focused, structured English lessons. These classes cater to adults at all stages of learning, from complete beginners to those looking to polish their skills. The lessons are practical, supportive, and most importantly, they’re face-to-face, helping people gain the language skills they need to thrive in their new home.

Workshops that Inspire

The Prosper grant also supports a range of workshops designed to bring people together and celebrate creativity. Highlights have included a Men’s Dance workshop at The Art House, run by Dance United Yorkshire, and two hands-on craft sessions. These workshops offer more than just new skills, they’re a chance to express yourself, share stories, and feel part of something bigger.

A Community Effort

None of this would be possible without the support of local volunteers and donors. From sorting clothing donations to teaching English or simply offering a friendly face at the drop-in centre, volunteers are the heartbeat of City of Sanctuary. Many have their own stories of seeking sanctuary and now give back, helping others find their feet in Wakefield.

Get Involved

City of Sanctuary is always looking for new volunteers and supporters. Whether you can spare an afternoon or want to donate clothing or food, every contribution makes a difference. Together, we can ensure Wakefield remains a place of safety, welcome, and opportunity for all.

Wherever we come from, we all have a right to feel safe. That’s why City of Sanctuary is building a more welcoming community for people rebuilding their lives in the Wakefield District.

One smile, one lesson, and one act of kindness at a time.
