Summer in the City with Grow Wakefield

We had the pleasure of visiting Andy Austerfield and the Grow Wakefield team at their Peterson Road / Prosper House allotments in the height of the Summer gardening season, August 2024.

With the help of a Prosper grant, Andy and the Grow Wakefield team have turned an underused piece of land into a stunning community allotment in full bloom. Featuring 12 raised beds which are lovingly maintained by local residents who, as well as being passionate about their plants are also growing through mental and physical health issues.

Being a part of Grow Wakefield has helped them to develop pride in what they have achieved and provided opportunities to socialise together.

Visiting on a Wednesday meant we were able to meet some of the weekly gardening club members as well as being treated to a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers and wildlife.

The team have plans to install a pond in Summer 2024 which will provide a place to sit and reflect as well as encouraging a whole host of new wildlife.

In some of Grow Wakefield’s other locations of Outwood and Featherstone, the team are in the process of installing bee hives and bee keeping facilities.

If you feel inspired to get growing, you can visit the Grow Wakefield website for more information.
