Supported in part by a Prosper Small Grant, the Horbury District Men’s Shed has been able to continue its work and keep the doors open, welcoming people into a small space that gives big results. The Shed has been created with the wider community in mind, the team are welcoming members from Horbury and South Ossett such as Flockton, Thornes, Ossett and Batley as well as from Horbury itself.
When we visited the Shed recently, what stood out straight away was a space full of conversation, laughter, and smiling faces. Over the noise of the machines, people are chatting, sharing skills, helping each other and getting stuck into projects.
Run and managed by The Cluntergate Centre, Horbury Men’s Shed currently has around 40 members signed up. It offers a space where people can come together, learn new skills and feel part of something. For many of its members, The Shed is a vital social lifeline, a place where friendships are formed and confidence is rebuilt.
It’s called Horbury Men’s Shed but it’s not only for men. A dedicated women’s session takes place every Monday, opening up the same creative environment to even more people in the community. In a world where we are seeing loneliness and isolation becoming more and more common, having somewhere to go that feels purposeful and welcoming can make a big difference.
