The sun was shining, the air was cool, and together we walked 4.5km through Horbury and Ossett.
These walks take place all across the Wakefield district at differing times and locations to suit as many people as possible, bringing people together for gentle movement, friendly company and connection with nature in their local spaces. As we strolled, I spoke to regular attendees who shared their reasons for coming along.
For many, the walks are about health; a chance to stay active, recover from illness, or take steps towards better fitness. But just as important is the social side. The walks provide a reason to get out of the house, particularly for those who live alone or care for others. As one walker told me, “We start as strangers and leave as friends.” That sense of belonging is what keeps people coming back, week after week.
I heard moving personal stories too. One gentleman told me about his sudden triple heart bypass, following a year of undiagnosed shoulder pain. His recovery was painful and difficult, but the Walking Fit group gave him something vital to look forward to, a lifeline in both his physical and emotional recovery.
