Growing Connections at Appletree Community Garden

As part of our 2024 Small Grants round, we were proud to support a truly inspiring green space at the heart of the community: Appletree Community Garden in Agbrigg.

This isn’t your usual garden or allotment. While raised beds brim with plants and wide pathways ensure accessibility for all, what really sets Appletree apart is its passion and commitment to people’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

A Sanctuary for Those Who Need It Most

Many who visit Appletree Community Garden have slipped through the cracks of the healthcare system. Some arrive in urgent need of mental health crisis support. What they find here is a calm, non-judgmental space where they’re met with kindness, care and connection.

The garden includes a private wooden building specifically placed for sensitive, personal conversations to take place in comfort and confidence. Visitors are welcomed with free tea and coffee, encouraging informal chats and moments of togetherness that might otherwise be missing from day-to-day lives.

Supporting Women to Flourish

One of Appletree’s standout successes is its Women’s Group, which has grown from just eight members to an incredible 86! The group members meet to share time, talk, laugh, and take part in social activities including crafts and even stand-up paddleboarding sessions with the Canal & River Trust.

It’s a beautiful example of how a green space can become a launchpad for friendship, empowerment, and new experiences.

The Impact of Prosper’s Support

Our grant helped fund practical but vital additions to the garden: a compost toilet and a new polytunnel cover. These might sound simple, but they’ve made a huge difference. With proper facilities, visitors can now stay longer in the garden. And the updated polytunnel has allowed for the growing of more exciting and challenging plants, which in turn supports learning, skill-building and joy for the community.

A Place to Return, Time and Time Again

Appletree Community Garden isn’t about ticking off gardening tasks. It’s about being outside in nature, having space to breathe, and knowing there’s someone who will listen. It’s about connection over perfection. It’s a lifeline for many and a shining example of what community can look like when it’s nurtured with love.
